Setting Up a Group Takes Time to Do Well.

In the past, I have set up groups and started them and THEN ran into all sorts of tricky questions and issues that I was not prepared for. Although, it is not natural to me, planning effectively aims to ensure a quality and a holding for the group members.

In the USA, each incoming President, has 100 days to plan before taking office from the election and then is expected to have a 100 day plan ready to implement in first days of their tenure. I have adapted this concept to give some guidance on what you might need to have ready.

I find this plan be a great tool. It is useful to set deadlines for each part of the process.

I suggest that you do 100-day plan. Depending upon your skills in business, some stages can be achieved quickly for some you may need extra support.

100 Day Plan - Firstly, the Pre- planning stage – getting a product to sell.

Group Exercise

Tonight we are going to design your group in pairs. The first stage is getting the product designed and the delivery and support thought through. This is based on the reflective questions I have asked you do for this session.

Task: Listener – support the person to be as specific and narrow as possible. Concentrate on A to D, please discuss the shadow.

Planning ActivityIdeasNotes
AIdea for My Group isProcess Group for parents/carers of LGBTQ+ children/youths/people
BPurpose of My Group isImprove communication between parents/carers and the LGBTQ+ person
CMy motivation for My Group isLGBTQ+ people are more likely than most to be victims of abuse. Good communication with their carers is a real protective factor. Developing a protective community. Potential clients.
DShadow of my group (including the risk of transference) could be?Difficulties that carers/parents have of accepting that their charges are LGBTQ+. Unacknowledged LGBTQ+ traits within the carers/parents that they project onto their charges. Unconscious and conscious anti=LGBTQ+ bias. Project things onto other members of the group. What do parents want? It could be a control thing. Acknowledgement of sexuality - can I then control my child. Separation anxiety? Child growing up? Knowing their own self? Influenced by others, not me! Will the group re-establish control over the child. What about the kids trying to separate from parents. What is the risk of transference - YOU THE TRAINER KNOW HOW TO DO IT… BRINGING IN THE CAR MECHANIC. You guys are the experts. Loss of grandchildren. Person coming to be ‘super-parent’.
EWho is involved?Shona + me - leaders
FLeadership Style best fitting for my group isLook at the article on the downside of leadership roles. Look at Daniel Goleman: The emotionally intelligent leader. How do you want to model yourself for the group? Relational, etc? (Beck if worried about transference) So, with Shona, probably relational. TA - Ware and Vann Joines. (80% relationship, 10% money and 10% on other factors - recruit people with the relationship script).
GWhere will I get the Support for thisIn terms of delegates - local LGBTQ+ and other support groups. e.g. Sadies butterflies, Carmarthen LGBTQ+, Dr MZ, FLAGG, Umbrella Cymru
HTimeframe for PlanningIn planning now. Need to start publicity for a start in Jan/Feb 27 - Aiming for 8 sessions.
Start Date – 100 days from 00.00.27

Other ideas: weight as a complex issue - what does size mean to you? obesity and other weight-related phenomena - funding from public health? CPD even for those people? Leading through perma-crisis
