The Passenger Pigeon
When I was at primary school, about 8, I had a book about species that had become extinct. One of the most egregious was the fate of the passenger pigeon. They had darkened the skies with their flocks that would contain millions of birds. Within a relatively short period of time human beings had shot every last one. Here are the stuffed remains of one of the last specimens.

On the other hand, species can go extinct without our help. I find it a dazzling statistic that 99% percent of all species are extinct
